Translating Vision Plans into 1 and 3 Year Objectives

With your Vision Plans in place, you can start to think about how to move on them and when.

If you were like me, you wrote down a bunch of things as part of your 10 year vision. Not all of them take 10 years to accomplish. And not all of them can (or should) necessarily be moved on immediately or at the same time. For example:

  • I want to become a competitive race car driver. But I plan to wait on competing on tracks with other people until my kids are in college - either I’ll die or my wife will kill me. So I can start that process on the back half of my 10 years.
  • I have 5 years left with my son, and a few more with my daughter. So the project to help them become great people starts this year.
  • I want to write 4 books in the next 10 years. That won’t happen if I wait too long. So I plan to write book #2 this year (although it might not publish this year.)

So look through your 10 year vision and your vision plans. Ask yourself, based on how long they’ll take and when you’d like (or need) to achieve them, put down a tentative start date.

Then, for the ones that need to start or finish in the next 3 years, attempt to create a set of 1 and 3 year objectives. These will become the projects that we work on in the weeks ahead.
