Create Your Habit Plan
- Refer back to the work weβve done so far:
- Your 10 year vision
- Your vision plans
- Your values (especially the implications)
- Your character formation goals.
- Identify a couple areas that will require new habits in order to be successful.
- For each area, take 5 minutes to brainstorm habits. Remember there are many ways to accomplish most objectives. You can refer to the example habits for inspiration, but feel free to be creative.
- For each potential habit, ask yourself 3 questions, scoring each on a scale from 1 to 5.
- Will this help me achieve my desired end state? (Impact)
- Do I want already want to do this? Do I enjoy it? (Motivation)
- Am I capable of doing this? How much effort would it take? (Ability)
- Total up the scores and choose a list of finalists. While you donβt have to use the totals blindly, consider them as an objective source of feedback.
- For each, translate it into a habit statement using Foggβs model, including the trigger and the simplest version of the habit.
- Create an order for how you plan to implement your final list of habits. Only focus on one at a time to start.
- If you have events coming up that you worry will impede your ability to start the new habit, commit to starting the habit two weeks from now. (This can be particularly useful for work-related goals that might have meetings or commitments that conflict.)
